Basketball Play Terminology Explained.

Fist – Pick and Roll

Punch- Low/High Post-up/Play

Quick- open Shooter

91 etc.- PF and C (4+5) screening for the PG (1) . the numbers always show which players/positions are involved in that play

Horns – Horns formation ( 2 Bigs at the elbows, wings in the corners)

DBL- double screen

Weave- multiple handoffs at the perimeter

Flare – Play that involves a flare screen

Update: Forgot some:

Give – handoff play

Cut- play where some player(s) cuts to the basket.

Alley- possible alley oop. Mostly in combination with a cut play.

So cut alley 12 means that the PG has the ball and the 2 gets some sort of screens which result in a cut and a potential alley oop.

(B) – alternative to the play without (B). Play starts on the opposite wing.

Side- play initiates on the wing. Fist 15 side therefore is a side-pnr of the pg and c.

Iso – Isolation play obviously. But some are quite good, because there is some action before the actual isolation. Some involve the so called iverson cut where a player gets offball screens at the free throw line and uses them to get to the other side and isolate from there or (if open) shoots.
