#CasementWindows #Crankers #DoubleCasementWindows
In this video I demonstrate how to use casement windows. As kids, many of us called these “cranker” windows because you turn a crank to open and close them.
I’d never used windows like these in all of my 40+ years. Since these were in a rental home, I was afraid to do something wrong and damage them. Safely, I experimented and figured it out. Now, I’d like to share what I learned with you.

ℹ️ What are the advantages and disadvantages of casement windows?
💡 Advantages of Casement Windows:
1. **Breezy Business**: They’re like the sails of a ship for your house, catching side breezes due to their open sash that acts like an air scoop.
2. **Sealed to Perfection**: When the wind blows, they don’t shiver and shake. Instead, they press tighter against the frame, sealing themselves off from water and air.
3. **The Lookout**: You get unobstructed views, making it easy to play neighborhood watch or just enjoy your garden without a grid of frames or sashes.
4. **Escape Route**: In an “oops, I burned the toast” event, they can be a real exit strategy, as they open fully for emergency egress.
5. **Arm Workout**: With the need for a good crank, they can keep your biceps in shape every time you want to let in some fresh air.
👎 Disadvantages of Casement Windows:
1. **Costly Characters**: They tend to have a heftier price tag than their sliding or double-hung cousins, putting a bit more pressure on your wallet.
2. **External Affairs**: They swing out, which means they can play bumper cars with high winds or can be a hazard on tight walkways.
3. **Screen Inside**: If you like your screen on the outside, too bad – it’s an inside job for casement windows, trapping more dirt and being harder to clean.
4. **Cranky Cranks**: Over time, the cranks can feel like they’re on strike, becoming stubborn or breaking if not handled with care.
5. **Size Matters**: For wide openings, it’s “Nope!” from casement windows, as they’re better suited to tall and narrow frames due to their design.
