Thomas claims she isn’t concerned with her accomplishments – “I get in the water every day and do my best” – but opponents claim she has an unfair advantage against cisgender competitors. Thomas claims she doesn’t “look into the negativity and hatred,” yet she has unwittingly become the face of the national debate about transgender athletes’ participation in sports. In February, 16 of Thomas’ teammates wrote to the school and the Ivy League anonymously, claiming that Thomas should not be allowed to participate because she could shatter “Penn, Ivy, and NCAA Women’s Swimming records; things she could never have done as a male swimmer.”
Lia Thomas will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in the near future. Is Lia Thomas a woman or a man?
