The small boxes of these drink powder singles can contain anywhere from 1 to as many as 12 powdered drink sticks. Each box is labeled differently, and many of them try to obfuscate the fact that what they’re selling to you isn’t much of a bargain.

The stores I usually shop for groceries for are Walmart, Sav-A-Lot, Winn-Dixie, Family Dollar, Dollar General and Big Lots. Family Dollar and Dollar general usually have a nearly identical selection. Walmart has a large selection and their best deals are usually with their store brand labeled “Great Value.” In fact, when I buy drink mixes at Walmart, I opt for their 2 quart drink mix options which are meant for pitchers of flavored drink, tea and lemonade, but can easily be portioned into smaller water bottles. And to be honest, while shopping at Walmart is a miserable experience, their values on their house brand are hard to beat. Walmart’s drink mixes are delicious. Big Lots usually has random flavors and a few staples. I usually stop in at Big Lots to find “weird” drink mix flavors that have usually been discontinued (and sometimes for good reason). Sav A Lot usually has some of the popular brands of drink mixes, but then they will have an off-brand or house brand that you’ve never seen before, and probably don’t want to try. Most of the generics at Sav-A-Lot or rather terrible but can capture my purchase because they’re cheap.

In my experience, if you’re trying to get the most single serving powdered drink flavor sticks for your money, the magic number is 8. An 8-count box of drink mixes is often the best deal you can find. Just look on the front of the box to find out how many are in there. While I’ve seen 10 ct. and even 12 ct. drink sticks for $1.00, that’s super rare.

Why are all single-serving powdered drink mixes sugar-free?
Something interesting is how all of these powdered drink mixes in single serving format are sugar-free. I would guess that’s because artificial sweeteners are much more powerful than sugar. The little powdered drink sticks are small, so there’s just not enough space to put enough actual sugar in them to make them taste good when they’re mixed with water.
