How to live without a clothes dryer.

I don’t own or use a clothes dryer and I’ll tell you why.

Many years ago, when I first started living on my own, I had little money to spend on anything that wasn’t utilities, car insurance or food. When I first moved into a place that didn’t come furnished with appliances, I had to buy only what was necessary. This usually meant a stove, washing machine, refrigerator and microwave. Without being able to afford a dryer, I adapted to hanging my clothes to dry.

As time went on, and my finances improved, I was able to afford more and better appliances. These kinds of luxuries made tasks like maintaining clean clothing and towels much easier. They’re the spoils of living in the modern world and having the money to afford them. The thing is, when I had the money to buy a dryer, I realized I simply didn’t need one.

I live a simple life, and I’m rarely in a situation where I need to have my clothing washed and dried in a short period of time. This would be different if I lived with a spouse and/or children. But, since I’m just lonely old Ryan, I don’t have mountains of clothes and towels to tend to. Also, I’m colorblind. Given this affliction, I have a wardrobe that mostly consists of monotone colored clothing. I wear bluejeans, grey pants and shorts, black, white or gray athletic wear and almost exclusively black shirts. Black colored clothing fades very quickly! That fading process is sped up when you use a traditional tumble dryer. This can be expensive.

So, even as a fully grown adult with the money to purchase a clothes dryer, I choose not to. It makes sense for me. Maybe it will make sense for you!
