What happens when chickens get pregnant and lay eggs?
Inside a hen, eggs start out as yolks that form in little pockets in the ovaries. When an egg yolk is ready, the pocket pops open and the yolk slides down a long tube called the oviduct. As the yolk travels down the oviduct, it gets covered in a layer of thick white stuff called albumen, which we call egg white. This egg white protects and cushions the yolk. Next, membranes and thin shells form around the egg white to hold everything together. After about 20 hours, the final hard calcium shell is added around the membranes. The shell helps keep the egg safe. The egg then gets squeezed down the rest of the oviduct by muscles and finally comes out of the hen’s body through the cloaca, or vent. Once an egg is laid, the next yolk pops out of the ovary and travels down the oviduct to start forming another egg. The whole process from the time the yolk is released to when the egg is laid takes about 24 hours. So that’s how a chicken makes and lays eggs – starting as a yolk, getting layered with egg white, membranes and a shell in the oviduct, then coming out through the vent.
